722 Tour - the luxury Mille Miglia tour experience

Bugatti at speed during a recent Mille Miglia

PROVISIONAL dates: Monday 11th to Sunday 17th May 2020

The 'Mille Miglia' is one of the greatest classic car 'race' events in the world. Since it's reintroduction back in 1977 it has been a four day regularity race around Italy, starting and finishing in Brescia, taking in Rome and other historical Italian cities.

Why '722 tour', rather than '1000 Miglia holiday'?

'722' refers to the start time allocated to the great Stirling Moss, paired with 'navigator' Dennis Jenkinson, in the 1955 Mille Miglia. Moss and 'Jenks', driving a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, went on to set the fastest time on the event. Their time of 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds was never beaten - the event lasted only 2 more years before it was stopped as an all out race.

The Mille Miglia now runs as a 4-day 'retrospective' with competitive elements based around matching set finishing times which penalise drivers for being early so as to negate the need for excessive speeds! A handicapping system also allows cars from the 1930's to compete for overall honours against much later machinery. 2017's victory was taken by Andrea Vesco and Andrea Guerini in their 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport Zagato beating off the challenge from a wide selection of cars, including the Mercedes-Benz 300SLR driven by Mercedes-AMG boss Toto Wolf.

Whilst we could call our tour a Mille Miglia holiday, we feel that rather under-sells what we are offering. Our package includes hotels, most meals and the experiences shown that add up to much more than a luxury holiday.

The dates for the next edition (the 93rd anniversary of the first Mille Miglia) are currently awaited but based on past experience would would expect the event to take place during the week of May 11-17, 2020.

Day Three - Wednesday - start of the Mille Miglia

After breakfast and check-out, we set off to Fiera near the race start to soak up the atmosphere of the pre-race build up in the collecting area. As start time approaches we will take up position in Brescia town centre to see the cars pass by on leg one of their adventure. We have secured a prime viewing location and will enjoy a late lunch just a few metres away from the route as the 400+ classic cars pass by. In the early evening we depart to our next overnight stop close to Modena. Dinner tonight is a light supper after our substantial, late, lunch.

What about flights?

Whilst we don't include flights, here's some advice on where to fly to for our Mille Miglia 6 night tour.

The closest airport to the start and end of our package is Orio al Serio, also known as Bergamo Airport or Milan Bergamo (code BGY). Ryanair operate flights from Stansted to Bergamo. Tranfers are around an hour.

Also consider Verona which is served by BA and EasyJet amongst other airlines. Again transfers are about an hour.

Next up is Milan Linate, which tends to be the more expensive option due to its close proximity to Milan itself. BA fly to Linate from London Heathrow. Transfers available at additional cost - and take around 1hr15.

Alternatively Milan Malpensa offers flights from Gatwick and Luton with EasyJet. Transfers available at additional cost - and again take around 1hr30.

Flights are available from as little as £45 per person, each way, according to Opodo.

Airport-Hotel transfers

For all airport transfers - we can arrange to meet your flight. Note that there will be an additional charge according to your arrival/departure point.
Example costs: Milan Bergamo arrival/departure transfers - no additional cost.
Verona - contact us for price.
Milan (Malpensa or Linate), private car approx £300 each way, alternatively we make be able to match you with other guests to share an MPV - approx £60pp each way.

Notes about the event

The final, detailed, route of the 2020 Mille Miglia has not yet been released. Until we receive the final route outline our intermediate hotel remains provisional (The hotel RivaLago on Lake Iseo is booked and confirmed as our start and end point). Nor will our viewing locations be confirmed until we have final sight of the full route.

We've been asked a number of times, so will suggest that you are physically able to walk about a mile at a reasonable pace. There are a number of locations that can be tricky to reach by coach, so some walking is required. 2017's tour included one gentleman recovering from a leg break, who found the distances fairly easy-going. Also be aware that you must be able to climb from a jetty into one of our boats (and out again) to take part in the lake cruise.

Our included accommodation

Our first couple of nights (and the last one) are in a stunning lakeside 'Hotel Rivalago' at Sulzano. On the shores of Lake Iseo, this hotel is about 30 minutes from the centre of Brescia and perfect for the start (and end) of our tour.

If you wish to drive, we can arrange parking for your car during our tour.

The intermediate hotel is currently only provisional until we have sight of the route outline from the Mille Miglia organisers.

The hotel Rivalago is in a stunning setting on the shore of Lake Iseo

Meals - what's included?

Dinner is included on each evening of the tour. In the main this will be at a traditional-style restaurant although a couple of meals will be in our hotels. Note that Wednesday evening will be a lighter 'supper' following the lunch provided for us in Brescia

A couple of lunches are included - in Brescia on Wednesday and at Maranello on Friday. All other lunches are at the clients' discretion. You will find that you are generally spoilt for choice!

We will be 'on site' throughout the event to ensure your needs are catered for throughout.

Have you considered extending your stay with a trip to the Monaco F1 weekend or Monaco Grand Prix Historique?
The Monaco Historic GP takes place on alternate years so the next opportunity to combine with the Mille Miglia will be 2020. The event normally preceeds the Mille Miglia and can involve a quick dash from Monte Carlo to Brescia - it's about 5 hours by road.
F1 weekend is normally the week after the Mille so a slower transfer is possible, maybe visiting some other fascinating cities en-route, such as Venice, Florence, Piza or Siena. Talk to us about some of the ideas we can recommend for your extended stay.
